How To Rank Your Website In Multiple Cities

The question I hear most often from clients and people seeking my advice in various facebook groups is “My website is based in city A, but how can I get it to show up first in Google for City B, C, D, and E?”

Having a website on the first page of Google for multiple cities has it’s obvious benefits. Ranking on page 1 makes it possible for business owners to target a larger audience, gain more traffic to their website, improve sales and add more revenue to their bottom line.

Before I give away important tips on how to rank any website in multiple cities, I first want to share why a local SEO campaign is a must in 2019.

Mobile Search

More consumers than ever before are using their favorite mobile devices to research products and services that they want or need. Because a majority of these searches are conducted on mobile phones, it has led to a massive increase in the importance of local SEO for small business owners.

The reason why local SEO is so important is because Google uses the phone’s location to deliver the best results that are locally relevant to the search phrase or keyword.

Without properly executing a local SEO campaign, you are missing out on a large portion of your ideal customers that are searching for your products or services in nearby locations. These search users end up doing business with your competitors.

Local Google Maps — Google My Business

Google will display three businesses in their local “Google map pack” when people conduct a search for a local business and/or service.  These top 3 Google My Business listings receive the most traffic because it takes up the largest amount of real estate on the results page.

It also allows users to get a snapshot of what a business is about before ever having to take action. Customers get to see the businesses’ online reputation, hours of operation, google reviews, phone number, website, and location.  This is all important information a buyer needs in order to make a sound purchasing decision.

If you’re a local business owner who wants to capitalize on customers searching for your product or service, then you must implement an effective local SEO campaign.

Now that you know why local SEO is a must for your business, we’ll show you exactly how you can rank your website at the top of Google for multiple cities.

Top Local SEO Strategies To Rank in Multiple Cities

1. Location Pages

The most important step to implementing an effective local SEO campaign for multiple cities is to build location pages on your website. If you’re a business that provides services in 5 cities, then each one of those cities needs it’s own page.

For example, a Landscape Company centrally located in City A will have a website structured as follow:

  • City A – landscapecompany.com
  • City B – landscapecompany.com/city-b-keyword
  • City C – landscapecompany.com/city-c-keyword
  • City D – landscapecompany.com/city-d-keyword
  • City E – landscapecompany.com/city-e-keyword

I think you get my point.

The reason why this is necessary is because Google’s search results are heavily based on the search users location.  So, if you have a page completely dedicated and optimized to the keywords + location of the search user, then you have a better chance of ranking that individual page at the top of Google.

2. Google My Business

First thing you need to do is claim your Google My Business listing (GMB). Believe it or not, 56% of Google My Business listings are left unclaimed. There are not enough business owners who are taking advantage of this free platform to advertise their business. Having a Google My Business listing that is optimized to perfection will help small business owners separate themselves from their competition.

Earning one of Google’s top 3 local map pack means more business on a local level. Majority of the time people will select one of the top three featured businesses displayed in the map section.  That’s because it takes up most of screen whether it’s desktop or mobile, people trust and rely on the information that is being presented, it’s quick and convenient for people to contact a business, and customers can read and compare Google reviews.

By not ranking your Google My Business listing in the top 3 of the maps when people search for your services, you are leaving hundreds if not thousands of dollars on the table each month.

(This applies to single location GMB’s.  You must have verified GMB’s in multiple locations if you want to show up in the top 3 maps for additional cities).

3. Keep Your Citations Consistent

Citations, aka social directories, are directories on the internet that display your business information.  A few examples of citations across the web are Yellow Pages, Yelp, Yahoo Local, and Manta among hundreds more. The most important information that impacts the Google My Business map ranking is the Name, Address and Phone number (NAP) of your business.

Google uses these citations to cross reference the information that is on your Google My Business listing. Inaccurate information on a number of social directories may cause Google to proceed with caution when ranking your GMB listing. If Google doesn’t trust a business’ information listed on the web, then the GMB won’t rank well because Google is unsure of the information.

The opposite is true by having information that is EXACTLY the same on your GMB and social directories across the web. Having accurate and consistent NAP on citations that reflect the information on your website and GMB builds trust with Google.  Your website and GMB listing is more likely to show up higher in the search results because Google knows exactly who you are and what you do.

Remember, Google has to provide a positive user experience if they want people to keep using their search engine, which means they have to trust the information enough to display your website or Google My Business listing at the top for users to see.

4. Get Local Reviews.

Accumulating Google reviews is an important step to building an online presence on a local level. Consistently earning reviews is a strong signal to Google that customers are interacting with your Google My Business listing, which continues to put your GMB in Google’s circle of trust.  The more trust that your listing builds with Google, the better chance you have of cracking the top 3 Google Maps.

Google specifically looks at a GMB’s review count because they want to provide search users with a positive experience, like I mentioned before.  People who are searching for products or services rely on reviews from past customers to help determine their purchasing decisions.

This is why getting reviews are so important for local business owners because it offers multiple benefits.

Reviews are a strong ranking factor for Google My Business listings, and customers are more likely to purchase from businesses that have a strong online reputation. Nearly 88% of customers read and compare online Google reviews before making a decision.

5. Create High-Quality, Location Specific Content.

If you want your website to show on the first page of Google for specific locations, then you must create high quality content focused on those locations.  This can be easily accomplished through a blog page on your website. These articles must be thoughtfully created so that they make sense to the reader, but are also optimized for the focus keywords and locations that you’re intending to rank for.

Remember, Google’s results page is based on the location of the search user.  For example, if someone was searching for “Houston Realtors”, they would be extremely frustrated if Google showed results of realtors in Dallas, or San Antonio. In order to provide a positive user experience, Google must bring results that are relative to the search users location, among other things as well.

This is why writing geo-specific content in your blog articles is an absolute must if you wish to rank in multiple cities.
